Designer and Consultant, Netherlands
Through his ‘10 meters of thinking’ Paul Hughes unrolls stories that create organizational change. This change is an ongoing path where he uses design & branding to pave the way and offer signposts for the journey, which he coaches participants to walk with practical steps.
In our interconnected world we are facing global challenges, across every aspect of life, challenges we have never faced before, Paul believes that these challenges are in essence design challenges. It is this comprehensive scope of design that he feels we are called to address. We can feel empowered to do so once we realize that we can analyze the past because it exists, however the future does not yet exist therefore we need to design it.
Paul’s training and practice move from the level of the individual through community to government. For individuals his focus is on Design Thinking where reflective action is encouraged. For communities and organizations his focus is on Co-creation where the skill of consultation is developed. For governments and institutions his focus is on stimulating Design Ecologies where emergent qualities are sought after.
Having left the rolling green hills of his native Ireland in the mid-90‘s, he arrived in the distinctive flat planes of the Netherlands where he has worked in the creative industries. He believes the success of Dutch design comes from its unique ‘design ecology’ that has inspired him to design for ‘the relationships between organizations and their environment’; design thinking for the design of ecologies. The relationship between ‘economy’ and ‘ecology’ is a key driver in Paul’s work; a path for living brands of living organizations in a living world.
